1. No general state license requirement
North Carolina does not require a separate individual Surgical Technologist license.
North Carolina employers set their own Surgical Technologist hiring qualifications. Explore NCCT certification, clinical case requirements, and the UpTrain pathway.
The state does not currently have a general licensing or mandatory national certification requirement for Surgical Technologists. Hospitals and surgery centers decide which qualifications they require.
| Question | What to know |
|---|---|
| Do I need a North Carolina license? | No separate statewide Surgical Technologist license is required. |
| Is national certification required by the state? | No general statewide mandate; individual employers may require it. |
| Who decides whether I qualify for a job? | The employer, based on education, certification, skills, and experience. |
The North Carolina picture: The state's licensing requirements and an individual employer's hiring requirements are not the same thing.
| Pathway | What it involves | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| NCCT TS-C | Completion of an NCCT-eligible pathway and required verified clinical skills and surgical cases. | Positions recognizing NCCT and the applicant's other qualifications. |
| NBSTSA CST | The usual graduate route is a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program. | Positions asking for CST or accredited-program graduation. |
| Qualifying experience or military training | Certain employers identify experience or military education alternatives. | Positions with those stated eligibility options. |
For example, Duke Health has published positions naming NCCT or NBSTSA as certification options. Other North Carolina employers may require a specific type of education as well.
Job postings in North Carolina commonly include:
The exact combination depends on the hospital and role.
| Question | NCCT TS-C | NBSTSA CST |
|---|---|---|
| Issued by | NCCT | NBSTSA |
| National program accreditation | NCCA-accredited | NCCA-accredited |
| Typical new-student route | Graduate of an NCCT-authorized Surgical Technology program | Graduate of a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program |
| Clinical preparation | Verified surgical skills and live cases under the applicable NCCT route | Supervised clinical education through the qualifying program |
| Accepted by every North Carolina employer? | No | No |
For the NCCT Graduate Pathway, students generally must have graduated from an NCCT-authorized program within five years and submit the required training and skills documentation. NCCT also offers qualifying experience and military routes.
| Employer | NCCT recognition | Other stated requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Duke Health — Cary | NCCT or NBSTSA certification listed as an option alongside accredited-program graduation. | BLS; Level I classification can include new graduates or up to 18 months' experience. |
| UNC Health — Nash Hospitals, Rocky Mount | Accepts NCCT or NBSTSA certification. | Surgical Technology training or qualifying military training, BLS; senior levels require 3–5 years' experience. |
| Atrium Health Union — Monroe | NCCT or NBSTSA certification preferred. | Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology program or qualifying military training; BLS. |
The examples show how NCCT appears in real employer requirements. A credential being recognized does not remove the other qualifications listed for that job.
UpTrain offers its Surgical Technologist certificate with Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS). For students pursuing NCCT TS-C, the program includes supervised surgical externship training and UpTrain placement coordination.
| Program component | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Online coursework | 350 contact hours, self-paced; generally 4–6 months. |
| What you learn | Sterile technique, instruments, infection control, patient care, and OR procedures. |
| Learning support | Mentor assistance and program guidance. |
| Clinical training | Included and mandatory for NCCT TS-C, with externship placement coordinated by UpTrain. |
Required NCCT case documentation
| Surgical experience | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Total live-patient surgical cases | 125 |
| First-scrub cases | At least 90 |
| General surgery cases | 30–50 |
| Surgical specialty cases | 75–95 across at least 3 specialties |
Students complete these live cases in the supervised clinical setting, and clinical-site staff verify the documentation. Simulation and observation do not count toward the required live-case total.
The externship is included in UpTrain's NCCT pathway. Timing depends on clinical-site onboarding, available schedules, and qualifying surgeries; students do not need to independently arrange this component.
| Stage | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Online coursework | Approximately 4–6 months of self-paced study. |
| Included surgical externship | Coordinated by UpTrain after applicable coursework and onboarding; the clinical schedule depends on participating sites. |

| Certification and employment | NCCT reviews eligibility and documentation; employers complete their own hiring and onboarding process. |
The full career-preparation timeline includes both the online coursework and the required hands-on surgical experience.
