Illinois does not require universal Surgical Technologist registration.
Illinois regulates the protected Registered Surgical Technologist title but permits employment without registration under the Act.
A closer look at Illinois’s Surgical Technologist employment requirements, education and certification rules, supervision, alternative qualification routes, continuing education, and what they mean for students considering the UpTrain pathway.
Illinois regulates Surgical Technologist registration under the Registered Surgical Assistant and Registered Surgical Technologist Title Protection Act, 225 ILCS 130. Unlike states with mandatory employment qualifications for all Surgical Technologists, Illinois primarily regulates the protected title Registered Surgical Technologist.
Section 40(6) allows healthcare facilities to employ individuals they consider competent to assist in surgery even if they are not registered under the Act.
State registration means meeting Illinois requirements for the protected title. Employment without registration means meeting qualifications set by the individual employer.
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation administers the registration framework. Applicants must meet the applicable educational or training qualifications, provide the required certification, and complete the state application.
NCCT Tech in Surgery–Certified (TS-C) is a separate national certification and is not currently identified as an alternative to NBSTSA CST for Illinois registration. State registration is not required for every Surgical Technologist job.
Illinois law allows healthcare facilities to employ individuals they determine are competent to assist in surgery even without registration under the title-protection law. Hospitals and surgical centers may independently establish hiring qualifications based on patient safety, facility policy, and position responsibilities.
Some employers accept more than one certification; others require NBSTSA CST or a specifically accredited program. Employment flexibility does not guarantee acceptance of every training pathway.
NCCT Tech in Surgery–Certified (TS-C): An NCCA-accredited certification administered by the National Center for Competency Testing. NCCT offers multiple eligibility routes subject to current requirements. Our LSUS program prepares students for this pathway.
NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (CST): An NCCA-accredited certification administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Its standard educational route involves a qualifying CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program; other qualifying routes may apply.
Illinois registration identifies CST, while certain Illinois employers recognize NCCT TS-C for nonregistered positions. The credentials and educational eligibility routes are not interchangeable.
Several Illinois employers have identified NCCT certification as acceptable for certain Surgical Technologist positions. Credential recognition does not automatically establish acceptance of our LSUS educational program or guarantee employment.
A reviewed Surgical Technologist posting identifies certification through NBSTSA or NCCT as acceptable. The position also specifies two years of operating-room experience. This demonstrates NCCT recognition but may not be suitable for applicants without prior experience.
A reviewed Certified Surgical Technologist posting identifies NCCT TS-C or NBSTSA CST among accepted credentials. The position also includes educational qualifications and identifies an associate degree as preferred.
A reviewed Certified Surgical Technologist posting identifies NCCT TS-C and NBSTSA CST as accepted certification options. Its educational qualifications refer to accredited Surgical Technology education or documented equivalent training, subject to employer determination.
Employer postings may expire or change. These examples illustrate requirements identified during the October 2026 review, not guaranteed current vacancies.
Our Surgical Technologist Certification Program with Externship is offered through Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS). It combines online, self-paced coursework with required hands-on clinical training for the NCCT TS-C pathway.
Included and mandatory clinical component. Our externship placement team assists students in identifying suitable clinical opportunities. Site participation, student eligibility, onboarding, supervision, scheduling, and case availability affect placement. A particular site, start date, distance, schedule, or completion timeline is not guaranteed.
NCCT eligibility. Students must satisfy current NCCT academic, clinical, documentation and examination requirements. NCCT makes the final eligibility determination. Program completion does not independently guarantee certification or employment.
Educational accreditation. LSU Shreveport is institutionally accredited by SACSCOC.
LSUS is institutionally accredited. This Surgical Technologist certificate program is not described nor represented as a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited associate-degree program. Eligibility for NCCT certification and employment must be confirmed against current requirements.
Illinois permits employment without universal state registration, and several healthcare employers recognize NCCT TS-C.
However, an employer’s recognition of NCCT certification does not automatically establish that our LSUS educational program satisfies every hiring requirement.
Some positions require or prefer:
Other positions may recognize alternative training or documented equivalent experience.
For Illinois students, the key is to confirm acceptance of both the NCCT credential and the education and clinical training pathway.
Illinois House Bill 1598, the proposed Operating Room Patient Safety Act, addresses potential Surgical Technologist employment qualifications. The amended proposal includes recognition of certification through both NBSTSA and NCCT in connection with specified educational qualifications.
HB1598 has not been enacted into law as of the October 2026 review. Proposed requirements and effective dates are not current Illinois employment restrictions. If enacted, the final language, exceptions, and implementation provisions would control.
The appropriate pathway depends on career goals, educational format, and the requirements of your intended employers.

Student decision checklist: Identify target employers; review job qualifications; confirm NCCT recognition; verify degree and accreditation requirements; determine whether registration applies; review externship and NCCT eligibility; understand tuition and payment terms; and monitor Illinois law.

NCCT TS-C is a separate certification and is not currently identified as an alternative for the protected registration title.
Northwestern Medicine, HSHS St. John’s Hospital and UnityPoint Health Trinity have recognized NCCT for certain positions.
